The Third Bank of River

The formation of a river is not natural anymore; it becomes a process of human intervention in the modernity, which is realized by using different technical means: such as Dams, man-constructed riverbanks, flood control projects, the infrastructure of transforming river form, fixing it into a specific shape and position for a resource for human utilization; At the same time, the iterated information technology, such as surveying and mapping technology, remote sensing satellite, etc., has also solidified our cognition and imagination of rivers in knowledge production and visual representation.

Our practice means to re-examine the human intervention to the river, inviting more people to rethink of the relationship between the people and water.

Conflictual Dialogue · The Three Gorges and the Political Ecology of Mobility

In response to the complexity of water engineering and politicized ecology, we chose to open up more investigations with a public conflict-like dialogue, looking for clues with the public. We use documentaries on the Three Gorges as a starting point for dialogue, and materials such as research reports and other artistic practices related to water projects as extension materials. The material is then activated in the conversation, which continues to generate more discussion.

At the scene of the dialogue, there are witnesses of the Three Gorges migrants, hydraulic engineers, hydraulic power investors, river ecological researchers, technology critics, rural construction, ecological art, historical research and many more interested in the Three Gorges individuals.

We are surrounded by a huge remote sensing map of the Yangtze River landscape, and the river, vegetation and soil are all marked with mapping tables, like a precise plan from the top down. In the perspective of this plan, the old photos of the river that no longer exist, the technical imagination of the dam, the power generation wheel, the flood discharge landscape, the scenic spot tickets, etc., occupy the grid one by one. In this dialogue, the image and its objects are constantly moved and placed in the conversation, and continue to levitate in the new thinking, constituting a new power picture.

Night Walk Along the Sewers

The end of the conflict dialogue lets us follow more clues in the dialogue to open the field, but the water conservancy project still seems to be a distant, incomprehensible abstract picture for people living in the city.

We turn our attention to one of the recurring parts of water engineering throughout the city -- the underground pipeline network.

Along the Xiaojia River, once covered with farmland, we invited ten participants to search for underground water pipes beneath concrete, electric poles, and urban vegetation. By walking along the river, discussing the upstream reservoir, and redrawing the water pipes on the street, we overlap the upstream and the end of the urban water use and explore the invisible power relationship.
