TERRA PATRIA LIBERI (2023)

In a global political climate that is increasingly veering to the right, TERRA PATRIA LIBERI seeks to explore one of the roots of rising nationalist sentiments within a broader and more universal context that transcends national borders: children's education.

Yawen collected oral memories of childhood education from 24 friends of different ages from 9 countries around the world. From these accounts, the recurring element of national flags was distilled. Flags are the ultimate expression of semiotics, with colors and symbols together constructing collective narratives; for example, the most common color in flags is red, symbolizing the blood of warriors in many countries, where enemies and the other is delinated.

In the workshop, the artist guided participants to recollect, ruminate, and reflect on the education they received in their childhoods, uncovering hidden threads of nationalist narratives, such as the avoidance of colonial history in textbooks. Participants discussed the meanings of their countries' flags and how these were conveyed in school education. These flags then became materials for the group, who collectively cut them apart and reassembled them, reinterpreting and deconstructing these nationalist symbols in the process.
